DINOSAUR FOR SALE
Oh wait, it's just my old Sharp PC-9030 Laptop!

So I moved a while ago and I'm still unpacking. In one of my old boxes labeled "office stuff" I came across my old workhorse of a PC, my Sharp 9030. Man, how I loved this thing! I'm showing my age when I tell you it was cutting edge when I bought it from a small computer store in Delaware. These days, I have no idea if someone will find value in this as an email machine or starter PC for a child. But I thought I'd put it out there for my fellow eBay'ers to enjoy!

I plugged it in, charged it up and it works fine, although it's as slow as you would expect from a 1996 machine. The photo above is 100% real. No Photoshop tricks. The battery in this bad-boy was one of the first lithium-ion types in a laptop. It's booting-up Windows 98, unplugged, and still holding a charge!

Here's the funny part. I found an old press release. Wait until you read this...

"Sharp announces a "Pentium"-class notebook computer with high-performance multimedia capabilities; super-bright LCD screen, integrated six-speed CD-ROM drive, and the industry's first gigabyte storage, setting a new high-performance feature standard. With the new PC-9030, Sharp leverages their engineering expertise and has loaded the latest technologies to deliver the best-in-class features of any notebook computer."

PC-9030 Feature Set:

  • 120 MHz Intel Pentium-based CPU (includes 256 KBytes L2 cache and built-in math co-processor)
Ooo, a "math co-processor" - I really could use that for "VisiCalc".
  • Breakthrough LCD display, 11.3-inch, SVGA (800x600) native resolution, TFT active matrix
SVGA is like VGA only the "S" stands for "SUPER" Gee, I kinda wish this was "SUPER-DUPER"
  • Removable, lightweight six-speed CD-ROM that provides system modularity and flexibility.
They actually spelled this out as "six-speed". Like a transmission.
  • Industry leading 1.1 GBytes of hard disk drive space
Hold the phone. I just fainted. Giga is like... better than mega... isn't it?
  • Standard 16 MBytes of memory with two (8mb x 2) slots to facilitate expansion
Hey, forget this. MY Sharpie is tricked out with a full 40meg of molasses speed RAM!
  • Fully-compliant PC Card Slot (PCMCIA) with Type II and Type III standards
Never did figure out the difference between II and III, but at least this is "fully compliant".
  • High-technology, Lithium Ion battery pack
OK, "high-technology" is a little extreme - how does "moderately buzzed technology" sound?
  • Removable 3.5-inch floppy drive
So you can easily throw it in the trash.
  • Sharp's Glide Pad pointing device that is easy-to-use and maintenance-free
Good thing, 'cause I used to hate taking these in for an oil change.

Alright, enough is enough. This is in pretty good condition considering it's age. The display is a little on the dull side compared to a modern LCD but I can't see any dead pixels. A winning bid gets you everything above. The PC w/40mb RAM installed, integrated 6x CD drive, removable floppy, power supply, Microsoft mouse, the original manual, a fast-ethernet PCMCIA networking card, and the very spiffy "Fast Company" bag that offers no discernable protection, but plenty of memories about the dot-com boom.
